Texture: According to both Claghorn and Chernyavskiy, lightweight textures are of paramount importance when it comes to a facial self-tanner. “I look for formulas that are lightweight, buildable, and leave skin looking healthy and radiant,” says Claghorn. These not only improve absorption rates but are also easier to blend, which encourages smoother application and fewer streaks.
Formula: Your self-tanner should do more for you than temporarily bronze your skin tone, and both experts agree that basic tanning properties are the bare minimum. “A great facial self-tanner should feel like an extension of your skincare routine,” says Claghorn. Chernyavskiy agrees, sharing that she runs every facial self-tanner through an “acne-safe checker” site. “If my self-tan is going to break me out, I don’t want it on my face,” she states.

Which types of facial self-tanners are best for different skin types?

“For every skin type, the main focus for a great tan is hydration,” says Chernyavskiy. “Hydrated skin always tans more evenly and fades better, while dry skin is more likely to grab color and become patchy.” The tan artist broke down which formula types are best for different complexions, from dry types to oily and mature:

Dry skin: Serums or treatment-style formulas are great because they help keep the skin hydrated.
Oily skin: Lightweight gels or mists can work well, as long as they’re not too drying.
Mature skin: I’d usually stay away from mists because they can settle unevenly or be harder to control. I’d focus more on gels, serums, or hydrating treatment formulas.

Can you use a facial self-tanner if you have rosacea?

“I’d look for tanners made with high-quality, naturally derived DHA, as they lean more brown versus warm/orange,” says Chernyavskiy. “I also love erythrulose because it can help create a softer, more natural-looking fade.” The expert recommends running every potential new self-tanner through an acne-checker or consulting with your dermatologists before trying it on your skin, and she suggests keeping an eye out for extra skincare benefits. “I love seeing ingredients like squalane, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, glycerin, and other hydrating or barrier-supporting ingredients,” she states. “A facial self-tanner should not just give you color; it should help your skin look healthy while the tan develops.”

“I’d avoid facial tanners with a lot of alcohol because they can dry out the skin and cause an uneven fade,” says Chernyavskiy.
