Adrián Suar & Griselda Siciliani Lead Netflix Comedy Movie Based On Stage Play ‘Felicidades’ With Álex De La Iglesia Directing

EXCLUSIVE: A celebration, many secrets and a house that knows more than it should – that’s the topline for a new Netflix comedy movie out of Argentina and starring Adrián Suar alongside Griselda Siciliani. The film is based upon the play Felicidades (Congratulations) and Spanish director Álex de la Iglesia on board. Production is underway in Buenos Aires.

Felicidades is a successful stage play that won over Argentinian audiences. It follows a husband trying to avert a relationship crisis by organizing a special birthday celebration for his wife. What should be a perfect evening turns into chaos with the arrival of a psychic. The guests at the celebration find themselves trapped by their own lies while inside a house that has a life of its own.

The Felicidades movie adaptation, which has yet to have a confirmed title, is produced by Preludio, the label founded by actor and media exec Suar and Diego Andrasnik. The film’s cast also includes Benjamín Vicuña, Violeta Urtizberea, Mike Amigorena, Martín Garabal, Mónica Raiola and popular local actor and comedia Diego Capusotto.

Suar and Siciliani have appeared together on-screen before, notably in the drama series Sin Código (Without Rules). Suar paid tribute to Netflix for backing the Preludio-produced project and added: “Having a director like Álex de la Iglesia filming in Argentina is a real luxury and a huge boost for our industry. I am very proud of the team we have put together: acting alongside Griselda again and a first-rate cast, with so much talent gathered together.”

De la Iglesia, meanwhile, has his own prodco and is a principal in the form of Banijay-backed Spanish label Pokeepsie Films. It makes the smash hit Culpables movies and his credits also include HBO’s Spanish series 30 Coins a well as multiple genre movies. He helmed upcoming mystery thriller La Cuidadora (The Caregiver) for Netflix, but Felicidades is his first project for the streamer out of Argentina.

“Felicidades revolves around a family that clings to an image of itself while everything around them begins to destabilize,’ the director said. “The characters seek redemption in a grotesque, cruel, and humorous way, because that is the most honest language I know. Now that reality has murdered fiction, it’s time to take revenge and give it back a smile. It is a privilege for me to work with this cast, who have perfectly understood the search for truth in the chaos.”
